Traffic & Transport Panel, February 2005 Ken Henderson. The “Thames Crossing Councils Group”, a group of parish councillors responsible for traffic/transport matters, meets to consider the alleviation of traffic congestion in the Henley, Sonning and South Oxfordshire areas. Society members Jane Gascoine and Ken Henderson attended the most recent meeting in late November in Dunsden Village Hall as observers. Also present were Frank Browne, leader of Wokingham District Council, and John Cotton, Planning Executive South Oxford District Council, who reported on progress to-date of a joint working party involving Reading, Wokingham and Oxfordshire District Councils. This was established in June to examine the area’s traffic problems, and we heard about the working party’s intended timetable. We discovered that Reading has developed a computer traffic model covering the area. On it, different bridge locations and configurations can be studied against future traffic forecasts. A £60,000 budget has been fixed, split equally between Reading, Wokingham and the combined councils of Oxfordshire and South Oxfordshire. A tight series of deadlines has been agreed for the completion of the study, which is expected to produce a set of recommendations for government consideration in July 2005. The Thames Crossing Councils Group members were given the opportunity to discuss possible crossing sites for testing on the computer programme but several preferred to develop proposals in their own councils and to report back rather than simply give their own opinions. The meeting of the Group was scheduled for Monday, January 31st. Meanwhile all Parish Councils would be provided with full information on the working party’s programme and planned options to facilitate meaningful discussion at their own parish meetings. |
